List of hypertension medications

The list of hypertension medications shows a variety of types to suit your body

The list of hypertension medications to be prescribed for those with high blood pressure is extensive. There are many types available to treat all forms of hypertension, making it easier to find the type best suited for your heart.

On the list of hypertension medications are diuretics, also known as water pills. They are designed to help the kidney flush the system of salt and water, decreasing the amount of pressure in the arteries and fluid in the bloodstream. The most common diuretics are hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril®, Microzide®. Others include: Furosemide (Lasix®) and Indapamide (Lozol®).

Also on the list of hypertension medications are beta-blockers. This type of medication is made to decrease the force the heart uses to pump blood into the arteries, lessening the amount the heart contracts. This in turn, lowers blood pressure. The most common beta-blockers are: Atenolol (Tenormin®), Carvedilol (Coreg®), Metoprolol (Lopressor®), and Propranolol (Inderal®).

Continuing on the list of hypertension medications are calcium channel blockers. This type of medication lowers blood pressure in more than one way. Examples include verapamil (Isoptin®) and diltiazem (Cardizem®). The force in which blood is pumped is decreased. They also open the arteries to allow for more blood flow and decrease resistance within the arteries. Many of the newer medications in this category work more specifically on opening up the arteries. Some of these drugs include: Amlodipine (Norvasc®), Felodipine (Plendil®), and Cilnidipine (Atelec XL).

ACE inhibitors are also on the list of hypertension medications. These work to dilate the arteries to allow for increased blood flow. They mainly decrease the risk of heart failure symptoms and risks of heart attack. ACE inhibitors that are available include: Benazepril (Lotensin®), Captopril (Capoten®), Enalapril (Vasotec®), Fosinopril (Monopril®), Lisinopril (Prinivil®, Zestril®), Quinapril (Accupril®), Ramipril (Altace®), and Trandolapril (Mavik®).

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) are similar in some ways to ACE inhibitors but tend to have less side effects. They help open the arteries to increase blood flow throughout the body and in turn lower blood pressure. Some of the ARBs that are available include: Candesartan (Atacand®), Irbesartin (Avapro®), Losartin (Cozaar®), Telmisartin (Micardis®), and Valsartan (Diovan®).

The list of hypertension medications is extensive in the many types offered, and your physician will help determine which medication is best for you, depending on your overall health and specific conditions.
